Peter I16721725MRussianPOLITICS: hereditary ruler known as Peter the Great. 1672–1725, tsar of Russia (1682–1725), who assumed sole power in 1689. He introduced many reforms in government, technology, and the western European ideas. He also acquired new territories for Russia in the Baltic and founded the new capital of St Petersburg (1703)

Peter I. died in 1725, leaving the crown to his wife Catharine.

Peter I. abolished the patriarchate, introduced his own classes and reforms, and made himself head of the church.

The crown then passed to the grandson of Peter I., a boy of thirteen.

Menchikoff, the well-known favourite of Peter I., was one of these.

When Peter I. after the battle of Narva, ordered old cannon and church bells to be cast into new ordnance, this was spared.
